Overview of telephony options in 2010
Broadly speaking there are two different routes you can go down. You
can buy or rent a telephone system or, go for the hosted type
option where you rent a voice over telephony service on a per user per
month basis (generally referred to as Hosted IP).
With hosted you still need to buy or rent Voice over IP handsets and additional
network ports in your office for the handsets. Voice over IP handsets also
need the same type of cabling you are probably using for your computers (known
as structured cabling or Cat5e or Cat6). Lastly hosted IP telephony also
requires good quality broadband (preferably a dedicated circuit) or a higher
quality data circuit.
The hosted route is generally most cost effective for around 5
users or in a scenario where you have a lot of home workers or distributed
office locations with small numbers of handsets.
Voice over IP technology in general is also available for telephone
systems. If you are in a situation where you need to move to a different
telephone exchange area Voice over IP lines on a telephone system allow
you to keep your phone numbers.
We offer both telephone systems and hosted options.
